
It is an absolute necessity of parenthood to help your baby (and yourself) obtain the best sleep possible. A infant (or parent) that does not sleep sufficient can easily become stressed and irritable. Here are some tips to get your baby to go to sleep and remain asleep longer.
Keep your baby active throughout the day. When awake, create a lively and active atmosphere for your baby. Stimulate them with typical household light and sounds. Chat, Sing and Play with them to ensure they stay active.
Monitor and restrict sleep during the day. It's important to set a regular plan for day time naps. However, sleeping for a long time in the daytime may create catastrophe when it is bedtime and your little on is not tired.
Try using a pacifier. Some individuals recommend them and some people dislike them, but pacifiers are a confirmed remedy to help some babies settle down and get to sleep. In fact, research has shown that using a pacifier can reduce the risk of SIDS. However if you choose to use a pacifier, you risk nighttime wakings when your baby loses it's pacifier and can't find it.
Establish a bedtime routine. It is very important to create a solid routine before bedtime. This will assist your baby know what to expect before bedtime. A regular nighttime routine could be a bath, reading a book, therefore a good night kiss. It's essential that it's consistent instead of what it includes.
Place your baby in it's crib while it's awake. This could be the most important point in this posting. If you hold, rock, or swaddle your baby to sleep and then place them in their crib or bassinet while they are asleep you are asking for trouble. When you do this and your baby wakes, they get very scared and baffled because it's not similar environment which they remember just before they fell asleep. This is asking for night time waking and crying. The secret is to hold your baby until they're very exhausted but not sleeping and then place them into their crib.
Try using "White Noise". From time to time, using a frequent noise or hum will help your baby get to sleep and stay asleep. Personally, we use a small box fan set on low. It produces a hum which seems to help relax our child and drown out other household noises. Instead of a fan, you could try a recording of a parent's tone of voice singing a lullaby or just a tape of rain or the ocean.
Don't let your self get frustrated. Getting your baby to sleep does not measure how good of a mother or father you're. Every baby differs from the others and you have to be patient and try to determine what your specific baby's needs are. Keep in mind that you may always ask your child's pediatrician for recommendations.
